Heifer is a handful and a half! She is wicked smart and picks up tricks and training super quick.  She plays hard, loves hard, and sometimes has a bit of a hard head. 

She had a rough start due to being "stuck" at birth which caused her to fall behind the rest of the litter. At just 2 days old, she was failing to thrive and I wasn't sure she was going to make it. I tube fed her every 2 hours round the clock for several days, carrying her around in my shirt like a little kangaroo joey. By day 5 she flipped a switch and decided she no longer needed help, she was finally able to keep up with the rest of the litter. And by 8 weeks she had totally caught up. She held on with that same fierce little spark that she has now.

One summer evening, when Heifer was only 5 or so months old, her fearless streak got the best of her.  She ran off with the other dogs to play in the pasture, and when I called the dogs in for the night, they all came back except Heifer.  She had fallen into a very deep hole, and somehow knew she had to let me know where she was by answering with a bark every time she heard her name called. 

That was her first adventure but it wouldn't be her last. A year or so later, she followed her nose far enough away from the farm that she couldn't figure out how to get back. We had an entire search party out for two days & two nights looking for this dog. To say I was worried sick is an understatement. She was finally found 7 miles from home, completely unscathed after spending two nights in the wild (in coyote territory no less). Her survival instincts are pretty impressive for a docile little labrador!

But for all her antics, Heifer has a heart of gold! She adores her humans, especially the littlest one. From the very beginning, she’s been Russell's shadow. If he’s jumping in puddles, she’s right behind him splashing along. If he’s digging a hole in the sandbox, she’s slinging sand with him! Their bond very cute. Heifer is one of a kind and we wouldn't trade this feral little dog for the world!!! ​
