In 2024, Wes and I built our dream "shouse" on the farm. We went with this style of house so that we could have plenty of space for our dogs.
Our dog kennels are located in the shop which is attached to our house. Our girls enjoy each other's company and prefer to stay in groups (rather than alone in a kennel) so we made the kennels huge and spacious (10'x20' with an outdoor run) to accommodate 2-3 dogs in each. Each dog has their own Kuranda bed, but they tend to prefer to pile up all on one bed because they are snugglers. We also have a living room in the shop with couches/furniture and a TV, where the dogs love to hang out. The in-floor heat keeps the place toasty in the wintertime, and the AC is nice and cold in the summer. We use a pressure washer and a WysiWash bleach system to keep it clean and smelling good. There are several windows and 3 overhead doors in the shop, which let in natural light and fresh air if needed. There is plenty of open space for shenanigans in the shop, so the dogs/puppies can run and play even if the weather is bad. Our facility is licensed with the Iowa Department of Ag/Animal Welfare. (Iowa Animal Welfare license #12543). Outside, we have a 10 acre yard + lots of pasture and crop fields to roam, as well as a ravine with a small creek right next to our house where the dogs love to hunt and play. It is a little slice of heaven in the middle of nowhere; we wouldn't want to live anywhere else! |
